Normal Vital Signs for Adults and Seniors at Home: What’s Normal and When to Worry
Normal vital signs help caregivers understand whether an adult or senior is stable at home, but the person’s usual baseline matters as much as textbook ranges. Common adult ranges include temperature around 97°F to 99°F, pulse 60 to 100 beats per minute, respiratory rate 12 to 20 breaths per minute, blood pressure around 120/80, and oxygen saturation 95% to 100%. Some older or bedbound adults may normally run slightly cooler, have lower blood pressure, slower breathing, or oxygen levels in the low 90s, so trends and symptoms are important. Caregivers should watch for sudden changes, such as a temperature rise of 2°F, pulse below 50 or above 100 without a clear reason, breathing rate of 24 or higher, blood pressure below 90/60 with dizziness, oxygen below 95% with fast breathing, or symptoms like confusion, shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness, and contact a medical professional when concerned.
