How to Assist a Client With Taking Medication Safely
Assisting a client with medication safely means following a clear routine that supports self-administration while staying within the caregiver’s role, care plan, and workplace policy. Caregivers should wash their hands, gather supplies, verify the medication label, dose, time, and client identity, provide privacy, position the client safely, offer the medication and water, and observe that the medication was actually taken. Afterward, they should make sure the client is comfortable, leave the call button within reach, clean up and secure supplies, perform hand hygiene, and document the medication right away. If anything seems wrong, such as a label mismatch, refusal, swallowing difficulty, or uncertainty about whether the dose was taken, the caregiver should stop, report the concern, and follow proper procedures.
