Oxygen Safety at Home: How to Use, Store, and Travel With Oxygen Safely
Oxygen is safe when handled properly, but it can make fires start more easily and burn hotter and faster. To reduce risk, keep oxygen tanks and tubing at least 8 feet away from flames, heaters, sparks, smoking, appliances, aerosol sprays, paints, thinners, and petroleum-based products like Vaseline or VapoRub. Store tanks upright and secured in a well-ventilated area, never in a closet or sealed space, and do not use damaged tanks. Post “Oxygen in Use” signs at the home entrance. When traveling, secure tanks in the back passenger area, keep the vehicle ventilated with a slightly open window, never transport tanks in the trunk, avoid smoking, and remove tanks from the vehicle promptly after arrival.
