How to Help With Bathing and Dressing Safely and Respectfully
Helping with bathing, grooming, and dressing requires patience, safety, and respect for the person’s dignity. Caregivers should prepare supplies ahead of time, keep the bathroom warm and clutter-free, use safety equipment such as grab bars, bath mats, detachable shower hoses, bath chairs, or transfer benches, and allow the person to do as much as they can independently. Bathing can be done through a shower, sponge bath, or waterless products depending on comfort, mobility, and safety, and daily full baths are not always necessary. For dressing, simple clothing such as pull-on garments, Velcro fasteners, elastic waistbands, large buttons, and low-slip shoes can reduce frustration. If the person becomes upset or refuses care, it is often better to pause and try again later rather than force the task.
