How to Help With Bathing and Dressing in Daily Care
Helping with bathing, grooming, and dressing is an important part of daily care, especially for people with physical limitations, cognitive decline, or dementia. Caregivers should focus on safety, dignity, patience, and preserving as much independence as possible. A good routine includes preparing supplies first, keeping the bathroom warm and safe, using equipment such as grab bars, a detachable shower hose, bath chair, bath bench, and non-slip mats, and giving simple step-by-step guidance. Bathing may be done through a shower, tub bath, sponge bath, or waterless products depending on the person’s comfort and mobility. Dressing can be easier with pull-on clothing, Velcro fasteners, elastic waistbands, large buttons, and low-slip shoes. If the person becomes upset or refuses care, it is often better to pause and try again later instead of forcing the task.
